It is no secret that we are proud of Detroit and all its accomplishments, especially over the past couple years. What was once a place that had fallen on hard times is now the epicenter for hope, revitalization and innovative ideas. New stores, new restaurants, and new buildings are popping up every week, all with lines out the door with people wanting to be a part of this exciting movement.
Detroit’s transformation cannot be ignored; it is quickly becoming a desired destination for people all over the world.
When we were in Copenhagen, Denmark over Christmas this past year, we came across a couple of stores that sold clothes with “Detroit” largely branded across the front. Who would have guessed that a once struggling city from Michigan would be revered as cool and trendy halfway around the globe? Detroit is proof that we have the option to let our past bring us down or to inspire us; Detroit is thriving, stronger than ever. It has become more than a place to visit, it is a place to stay and enjoy. Our idea of a perfect Saturday is waking up early to be the first at Eastern Market, afternoon shopping in Midtown, dinner downtown with a stroll through Campus Martius. Whether you call it home, you are a regularly returning guest, or just want to see for yourself what makes “the D” so great, you can bring a little bit of the “comeback city” to you with our precurated box, Open Me When You Are Down With Detroit.
This box highlights some of Detroit’s best artists, gifts perfectly selected to honor this extraordinary city. We can’t give away all the juicy details of the stories, but here is a sneek peak into one of our favorite boxes:
- Detroit Wick “Shreds” Cube: Out of his shop in Eastern Market, local artist Doug Schwartz wanted to help victims of illegal gun violence by creating something beautiful out of bullets swept from the streets of Detroit, encased in solid Lucite. Truly a one of a kind piece with an inspiring message.
- Wildsam Detroit Field Guide: More than just maps and Detroit favorites, this field guide features essays and stories that shed light on the true story of this history city. This guide focuses on the “urban renaissance” and all of the things that make Detroit a city of grit, ingenuity, and success.
- Detroit Grooming Co Beanie: Detroit’s #1 Barbershop and one of its quickest growing establishments features their own line of grooming products and accessories, many named after local landmarks and popular hangouts, such as Corktown and Belle Isle. This classic beanie is sure to keep your head warm in the cold Michigan winters while showing off the coolest city.
- City Bird Vintage Postcards, Detroit Patch, Pennant Sticker: The oldest store in Detroit’s popular Cass Corridor has been making unique items for quite some time. Their vintage postcards represent five historic images of the city, many of which remain today. The pennant sticker and patch are a perfect complement to create the perfect pride package.
